I talked my friend Ellen yesterday for the first time in a while. We've both been slackers at keeping up with each other. She told me that she was going to get married in July. As it turns out she and her guy had planned to have a big bbq, just for kicks, and as they started planning it and realized that it was going to be expensive they decided to turn it into their wedding. I just love that. It makes me smile.
After I talked to Ellen I got to thinking about all the silly things we did together. Drawing cartoons and making bad superhero movies in middle school, slacking off and being silly girls in welding class in high school... in fact, I recall one incident in welding class when Ellen and I were sitting next to each other practicing our oxyacetylene welding. She tapped me on the shoulder and ever so calmly said, "Look, my pants are on fire." I looked down and sure enough the bottom of Ellen's pants were on fire. Hilarious.
Then in college when we would get together we both felt that sure we were crazy and no one understood, but that was ok. I remember one time I had a particularly bad day and my brother had picked me up and taken me over to Christopher's house. Ellen was there and we went off together someplace (I'm thinking a laundromat, but that time period is kinda fuzzy to me). I just remember how ridiculous and fun that day turned out to be. I'm so glad she was there.
Then school was over and I moved off. I came back for New Years one year and stayed with Ellen and Gary. We went to the Eason's place in Cashiers and had a grand ol' time. I remember Ellen and I complaining to Andrew Harley, who was driving us home, that we were going to barf because of his driving. It's sounds awful, but it was hilarious. We were laughing and semi faux complaining the whole way.
And now, hopefully, John and I will be heading back to good ol' WNC for a July party that should be plenty memorable. I can't wait.
